Spurge

  • Summer annual broadleaf weed.
  • Leaves are opposite and not symmetrical.
  • Stems are smooth or hairy with "milky" sap inside.
  • Reproduces by seed.
Spotted Spurge
  • Has a distinct reddish spot on the leaves.
  • Has freely branched prostrate stems that do not root at the nodes.
  • Found in any disturbed area.
Prostate Spurge
  • Is similiar to Spotted Spurge but roots at the nodes.
Roundleaf  Spurge
  • Smooth stems that do not root at the nodes.
  • Leaves round, or nearly so with smooth margins and lopsided bases.
  • Found in sandy areas
Hyssop Spurge
  • Erect or ascending with smooth stems.
  • Leaves oblong to almost linear, with toothed margins and lopsided bases.
  • Found in lawns and disturbed areas.


Control Methods

  • Hand Removal or Hoeing
  • Herbicides:
    • Preemergence - atrazine*, simazine*, pendimethalin, isoxaben.
    (Apply in the spring after green-up.)
       
    * Excellent tolerance in centipede and St. Augustine grass only.
     
       
    • Postemergence - combination of these products:
        • [dicamba**,  MCPP**,  2,4-D**, and/or  2,4-DP**]
    (Apply in the spring/early summer.)
       
    **  Use lower rates on centipede and St. Augustine grass.
           Do not use in the root zone of desirable plants, especially dicamba.
