Ground Ivy

  • Perennial broadleaf weed.
  • Prostrate, creeping plant with four-sided, hairy stems.
  • Leaves opposite, kidney-shaped to rounded, prominently veined and with scalloped margins.
  • Readily roots at stem nodes.
  • Flowers, bluish to purplish with red speckles, arranged in groups of three to seven at stem ends or leaf axils. 
  • Reproduces from seed and creeping stems.
  • More common in shaded than full sunlight areas.


Control Methods

  • Hand Removal or Hoeing
  • Herbicides:
    • Preemergence - NONE
       
       
    • Postemergence - combination of these products:
        • [dicamba**,  MCPP**,  2,4-D**, and/or  2,4-DP**]
    (Make repeated application in the fall when flowering).


              - glyphosate - non-selective control in shaded areas.


    ** Use lower rates on centipede and St. Augustine grass. 
          Do not use within the root zone of desirable plants, especially dicamba.
