Carolina Geranium

  • Winter annual broadleaf weed
  • Diffusely-branched semi-erect weed.
  • Stems are greenish-pink to red, densly hairy.
  • Leaves with long petioles, hairy, dissected into various segments, margins blunt toothed.
  • Small flowers are pink to purplish with five petals.
  • Fruit is a five-parted capsule that forms a "stork's bill" up to 0.5 inch long.
  • Reproduces by seed.
Control Methods
  • Hand Removal or Hoeing.
  • Improve sunlight, fertilization, soil pH.
  • Herbicides:
    • Preemergence - atrazine*, benefin, pendimethalin.  
     
    * Excellent tolerance in centipede and St. Augustine grass. 
       Tolerance in DORMANT  bermuda and zoysia at low label rates. See label for
        appropriate turfgrass.
     
     
    • Postemergence - combination of these products:
        • [dicamba**,  MCPP**,  2,4-D**, and/or  2,4-DP**]
                     (Apply late fall or winter during warm period above 60 ºF).


    ** Use lower rates on centipede and St. Augustine grass. 
          Do not use within the root zone of desirable plants, especially dicamba.
