Cudweed

  • Annual or biennial with prominent rosette of basal leaves.
  • All reproduce by seed.
Shiny Cudweed
  • Leaves bright shiny green above on upper surface, densely white hairry beneath.
  • Basal leaves are very broad.
  • All stem leaves of similiar size.
  • Flower heads are brown to purple.
  • Found in dry, open, sandy, disturbed areas.
Purple Cudweed
  • Stems highly branched form base of plant.
  • Stem and underside of leaves with soft velvet-like hairs.
  • Upper leaf surface dull green.
  • Rosette and lower stem leaves spatula-shaped with blunt tips; upper leaves reduced in size.
  • Flowers tannish-white in clusters at upper surface leaf axils.
  • Bracts surrounding flower clusters are pink or purple in color.
Control Methods
  • Hand Removal or Hoeing
  • Herbicides:
    • Preemergence - atrazine*  
       
    * Excellent tolerance in centipede and St. Augustine grass only. 
     
       
    • Postemergence - combination of these products:
        • [dicamba**,  MCPP**,  2,4-D**, and/or  2,4-DP**


    ** Use lower rates on centipede and St. Augustine grass.  See label for appropriate
          turfgrass.   Do not use within the root zone of desirable plants, especially dicamba.
