Bluegrass

  • Winter annual grass.
  • Sometimes called Poa annua.
  • Most common winter turf weed; seeds may start to germinate in August.
  • Weed of compacted, moist soils and sites which are frequently mowed close.
  • Low growing plant with fine stems and leaves.
  • Leaf blades are weak and are boat-shaped at tip.
  • Grows in clumps which merge into large patches in early spring.
  • Whitish-green color seedheads produced below mowing height.
  • Dies in unsightly patches in late spring.


Control Methods

  • Hand Removal or Hoeing.
  • Proper mowing height, fertilization, soil pH, aerification, traffic control.
  • Herbicides:
    • Preemergence - atrazine*, simazine*, pendimethalin, benefin, oryzalin,
          • dithiopyr, or prodiamine.
    (Apply in late summer or early fall).
    * Excellent tolerance in centipede and St. Augustine grass. 
     
     
    • Postemergence - atrazine**, simazine**. (Apply on dormant turf)


    ** Excellent tolerance in centipede and St. Augustine grass. 
         Tolerance in DORMANT  bermuda and zoysia at low label rates. See label for
         appropriate turfgrass.
