Common Lawn Weeds


Virginia Buttonweed

  • Perennial winter broadleaf weed.
  • Has a creeping or spreading habit.
  • Stems are somewhat fleshy and greenish white in color.
  • Elliptical to lance-shaped leaves are oppositely arranged on the stem.
  • White tubular flowers with four lobes at each leaf axil along the stem. 
  • Flowers develop into round "button-like" seed capsules. 
  • Fruit is green, elliptically shaped, hairy, ridged, located at each leaf axil.
  • Reproduces by seed, and root fragments.
  • Favors moist to wet sites.
Control Methods
  • Hand Removal or Hoeing
  • Herbicides:
    • Preemergence - NONE
     
    • Postemergence -   2,4-D* containing products (as needed).
          • See label for application interval.


    * Do not use within the root zone of desirable plants, especially dicamba.
