Southern peas should be planted after all danger
of frost is past. Peas prefer a light, well-drained soil that is
not too fertile. Peas grown in an over-fertilized soil produce a
great deal of foliage and often have very poor pod set. In the area
where southern peas are to be grown, reduce the amount of preplant fertilizer
to one-half the recommended rate.
Sow seed 2 inches apart in rows 36 inches apart. Thin to about
6 inches between plants. It is important to maintain relatively uniform
soil moisture during bloom and seed maturity.
