Thistle

- Winter annual or biennial with erect, robust stems from fleshy taproot.
- Leaves alternate, smooth, dark green with light green midrib and a whitish margin.
- Leaves are deeply dissected, each lobe having one to five spines at the tip.
- Flowers are pink to purple, occasionally yellow, in large terminal, spiny head.
- Reproduces by seed.
- Seeds have tufts of soft white hairs at the tips that disperse in the spring.
- Found occassionally in lawns but more common in fields, pastures, and along roadsides.
Control Methods
- Hand Removal or Hoeing
- Herbicides:
- Postemergence - 2,4-D* or combination product.
* Use lower rates on centipede and St. Augustine grass. See label for appropriate
turfgrass. Do not use within the root zone of desirable plants, especially dicamba.
