Sweet corn should mature before high day and night temperatures occur. Therefore, early planting is a necessity. Plant on or within a few days of the average date of the last killing frost.
Plant corn in rows 30 to 36 inches apart with seed 12 to 15 inches apart. Cover seed to a depth of about 1 inch. Plant sweet corn in a block rather than in long rows to ensure good pollination and ear fill.
Harvest in the early morning when the air temperature is still relatively cool. If harvesting during high temperatures, remove the field heat by plunging the ears into cold water or placing them in the refrigerator immediately. This helps maintain the fresh-from-the-garden quality of the ears. Normally, sweet corn is ready to harvest about three weeks from the day the first silk appears on the ear. |
