| An inventory of Alabama forest and water resources
finds riches beyond compare. Thriving forests cover almost two-thirds
of the state, and our water resources are the envy of every state in the
nation. It is thus no surprise that forestry, aquaculture, and wildlife
have developed into multi-billion dollar industries. Safeguarding
and developing these valuable resources will remain a major focus of Extension
education.
Tallapoosa County is blessed with abundant
of natural resources. Across Tallapoosa County, much of the land
has been converted back to forest or planted in pine trees. Forestry
is the #1 industry but hunting and fishing also contribute a significant
amount to our economy. Whitetail deer, wild turkey, largemouth
bass, crappie, bluegill, and other game and fish are found throughout the county.
Tallapoosa County is known nationwide for being
the home to Lake Martin, a 44,000 acre lake with over 743 miles of shoreline.
This great body of water provides homes for retirees and others in surrounding
area who wish to live and play near a clean lake. Most any weekend
you can find people fishing, boating, hunting, or relaxing on the lake.
Horseshoe Bend National Military Park provides
school students and tourists a place to study nature as well as history.
As you drive or walk through the old Creek Indian grounds and battle fields,
you can learn more about early American history or enjoy the beauty of
nature. Many picnics, annual events, and other outdoor activities
take place at the park.
With its abundant bodies of water and streams,
water quality is major concern for Tallapoosa County. Lake Martin
and the Tallapoosa River provides a large portion of the water for the
surrounding town and communities. A major effort is underway to educate
the public and industries to help keep our water at the highest quality and maintain our citizen's needs.
