Common Lawn Weeds


Large
Crabgrass

  • Spreading summer annual grass.
  • Weed of disturbed soil.
  • Germination begins in late February to early March when soil temperature exceeds 55 ºF.
  • Leaf blade, long than 2 inches, usually hairy on both sides.
  • Fibrous root system and roots at lower nodes.
  • Lower stems flattened, pale green, with hairy sheaths that form unsightly patches.
  • At maturity, 2 to 9 thin finger-like seedheads at end of stem.
  • Reproduces by seed.


Control Methods

  • Hand Removal or Hoeing
  • Control aerification, insects, animals, traffic, and mowing height.
  • Herbicides:
    • Preemergence - benefin, pendimethalin, oryzalin, dithiopyr, prodiamine.
          • (Apply in late winter)
     
    • Postemergence - MSMA* or sethoxydim**.
    (Apply in the spring/early summer to small weeds).

    *   MSMA  kills centipede and St. Augustine grass; use only on bermuda and zoysia.
    **   Use only on centipede grass.
