Japanese Beetles

Japanese beetles, which look like miniature "june bug" beetles, have recently become a major summertime pest and seem to have no preference on which plants they attack and feed on. Unfortunately, the preventive and control methods vary in success. Applying Diazinon or milky spore disease to the soil around the home lawn will help control the grubs of Japanese beetles, but only controls them in that specific area. Pheromone traps work very well but in the process will attract and bring in more beetles to garden and yard. Partially crushing one or two beetles will usually attract birds as predators. Sevin can also be used to control them. The best and most effective way at this time to control them is to hand pick them off and put them in solution of soapy water.

Prevention
  • Apply Diazinon or Milky Spore disease to soil
Control
  • Mixed Results with  Pheromone Traps
  • Use Floating Row Covers
  • Hand pick off
  • Partially Crush one or two to attract birds as predators
  • Directly apply the insecticde Sevin 50WP
