Common Lawn Weeds


Henbit

  • Winter annual broadleaf weed.
  • Greenish to purplish, tender, square stems with opposite leaves.
  • Leaves are rounded, coarsely toothed, deeply veined, and hairy.
  • At the top the plant, the leaves are directly clasped to the stem.
  • Similiar in appearance to Purple Deadnettle but upper leaves lack petioles.
  • Has pinkish purple trumpet-shaped flowers in clusters at the end of the stems.
  • Blooms appear in early spring.
  • Reproduces by seed.
  • Chemical control must occur before flowering.
Control Methods
  • Hand Removal or Hoeing.
  • Improve sunlight, fertilization, soil pH.
  • Herbicides:
    • Preemergence - atrazine*, benefin, pendimethalin, isoxaben,
          • oryazalin.
    (Apply in the early fall).
     
    * Excellent tolerance in centipede and St. Augustine grass. 
       Tolerance in DORMANT  bermuda and zoysia at low label rates. 
     
     
    • Postemergence - combination of these products:
        • [dicamba**,  MCPP**,  2,4-D**, and/or  2,4-DP**]
    (Apply in the fall or early winter to small weeds, but before blooming)
     
    ** Use lower rates on centipede and St. Augustine grass. 
          Do not use within the root zone of desirable plants, especially dicamba.
