Common Lawn Weeds


Chamberbitter

  • Summer annual broadleaf weed.
  • Also called "gripeweed" or "cannonball weed".
  • Often referred to incorrectly as "little mimosa".
  • Upright growing weed with strong taproot.
  • Leaves are thin, smooth-margined, oblong, arranged in two rows on the branchlets.
  • Inconspicuous flowers.
  • Reproduces by seed; seeds have a strong light requirement for germination.
  • Fruit is a round, warty capsule without a stalk, singly attached to the underside of the branches. 
  • Each fruit capsule contains 6 seeds.
Control Methods
  • Hand Removal or Hoeing.
  • Proper mowing height, fertilization, soil pH.
  • Herbicides:
    • Preemergence - atrazine*.  (Apply in spring after green-up).
      * Excellent tolerance in centipede and St. Augustine grass. 
     
     
    • Postemergence - combination of these products:
          • [dicamba**,  2,4-D**]
          (Apply in late spring/early summer to small weeds).


    ** Use lower rates on centipede and St. Augustine grass. 
          Do not use within the root zone of desirable plants, especially dicamba.

      Always Read the Label
