Tallapoosa County 4-H

The 4-H and Youth Development Program seeks to give young people the knowledge and training they need to reach their full potential.  Through 4-H programs, young people develop life skills in leadership, communication, decision making, problem solving, goal setting, record keeping, character building, and personal responsibility, as well as, build knowledge and skills in their areas of interest.  The four H's - head, hands, heart, and health - remain central even as program offerings expand to meet new social and educational needs.
 

Program goals of 4-H include:

  • Enhancing personal development
  • Building communities
  • Preparing for careers
  • Understanding science and technology

Extension partners with many associations, businesses, government agencies, and individual volunteers to provide the hands-on learning opportunitites that are the hallmark of 4-H programs. 

Tallapoosa County has over 1,300 4-H members in approximately 34 clubs, ranging from in-school clubs, home school clubs, private school clubs, after-school clubs, and community clubs.  Tallapoosa County 4-H'ers are among one of the best as each year they participate and compete in a number of 4-H contests on the county, district, and state level.  The Public Speaking Contest, Baked Foods Exhibit, Artwork Contests, Indoor Demonstrations, Wood Science Exhibit, and the Forestry Judging Team are just a highlight of the most popular competitions.  Other 4-H activities include 4-H Camp, the Environmental Stewardship Conference, the Mid-Winter Teen Retreat, District Round-up, and 4-H State Congress. 

4-H has played a positive role in the life of many youth growing up in Tallapoosa County.  It has and continues to teach youth about the many aspects of the world around us and give them the skills, tools, and confidence needed to be responsible citizens and leaders for tomorrow.
