Public Speaking
Contest

Who May Participate

Any Tallapoosa County Junior or Senior 4-H’er. All Club Officers must give a speech at the local contest. All 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in the local contest will be invited to the county contest. The 1st place winner in both divisions of the Junior and Senior categories will be eligible for district competition.

Speech Topics

Topics selected should address problems and/or opportunities of youth, families, and society in today’s world.

Objectives

The 4-H member will:

  1. Develop organizational, research and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  2. Explore problems and opportunities of youth, families and society in all areas of rural and urban life.
  3. Exhibit leadership.
  4. Cultivate public speaking skills through the presentation of speeches.
Categories
  1. Informative: Speeches are mainly facts about a subject.
  2. Persuasive: Speeches are mainly opinions or feelings about a subject.
Rules
  1. Speeches must be three to five minutes in length.
  2. No visual aids are allowed. These include: charts, pictures or other objects.
Scoring

Speeches will be judged on the following criteria: (20 points each)
 

  • Content – (Importance, knowledge, appropriateness, accuracy, originality)
  • Voice – (Quality, pitch, articulation, pronunciation)
  • Stage Presence – (Appearance, poise, posture, ease, confidence, personality)
  • Expression – (Force, emphasis, sincerity, directness, communicativeness)
  • General Effect – (Interesting, understandable, convincing, pleasing)


The County Public Speaking Contest will be in January at 6:30 p.m. at the Extension Auditorium in the Tallapoosa County Courthouse in Dadeville, Alabama. All 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in the local contests are invited to participate.
