Montgomery County's agriculture community is a strong economic base at over 50 Million dollars in cash receipts during 1999. The major crops consist of hay wheat, corn, soybeans, and cotton. All cattle totaled 41,000 head-which ranks Montgomery County fourth in the state in terms of cattle production. According to the 1997 Census of Agriculture, there were 654 farms in the county with a total land area of 240,951 acres. The average farm size is 368 acres
Agriculture related commodities in Montgomery County include forestry, cattle, hog and catfish farming, fruits and vegetables, and other types of productive crops. Educationsal oppertunities available to county residents include:
- Pesticide training and safe usage.
- Profitability of crop and animal practices.
- Waste Management training in an effort to conserve the environment.
- Programs and demonstrations concerning row crops and horticultural (home and commercial) concerns.
- Educational programs to numerous agricultural related organizations including the State Farmer's Market, etc.
- Training programs for Master Gardeners and many more.
