Nutrition Education Program

Who are we?
The Nutrition Education Program (NEP) is provided by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System at Auburn University through federally funded program targeting food stamp recipients and eligible nonrecipients. Our target audience includes Alabama students in grades P-12 who attend public schools that are 51 percent or more participatory in the free and reduced lunch program.

NEP has four broad objectives for nutrition education in the public school system:

  • Students will learn how to use the Dietary Guidelines and Food Guide Pyramid.
  • Students will learn good meal management and food safety practices.
  • Students will learn how to use good food-shopping strategies to cut costs.
  • Students will learn skills to enhance family meals.
The overall goal of NEP is to improve the quality of life of food stamp recipients or eligible nonrecipients through educational programs designed to increase knowledge and improve behaviors.

NEP Provides Results
Research has shown that NEP does make a difference in Alabama!
