The Expanded Food and Nutrition
Education Program

The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) in Montgomery County is supervised by Jovita Lewis, Extension Specialist and two agent assistants. This program is an integral part of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System's Family and Consumer Science and 4-H Youth Programs. The objectives of the Montgomery County Extension EFNEP staff - through teaching, is to help low-income families and youth acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and changed behavior necessary for nutritionally sound diets and to contribute to their personal development.

Client participation in the EFNEP program can be expected to result in:

  • Improved diets and nutritional welfare for the total family
  • Increase ability to select and buy food that satisfies nutritional needs
  • Improve practices in food production, storage, preparation, safety, and sanitation
  • Increase one's ability to manage food budgets and related resources such as food stamps, etc.
The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program in Montgomery County consists of three programs:
I. Cent$ible Nutrition
Cent$ible Nutrition Curriculum is designed to be used with adults with children taught individually or in small groups consisting of 12-16 lessons.
II. Have a Healthy Baby
Have a Healthy Baby curriculum is designed to be used with small groups of 5-15 pregnant teens or pregnant women and mothers with a baby under one year of age.
III. Kids in the Kitchen  
Kids in the Kitchen  curriculum consists of both a Basic and an Advanced nutrition based Youth Program. The basic program includes six lessons for ages 9-12 and the advanced program includes 6-8 lessons for older youth (13-19). Before moving to the advance program, all youth must complete the basic curriculum.

The youth component of EFNEP focuses on providing food and nutrition education for the personal development of low income youth.
