Mole Crickets

Mole crickets may become very active with the warm weather we are having. At this time of the year they are very difficult to control. They are tunneling and flying from place to place at this time of the year. They are doing very little feeding. Just tunneling under the grass and cutting it away from the soil does the damage.

If your damage is not too severe, you may be able to just roll your grass and keep it packed down where they tunnel up and you can get by without spraying. If your damage is severe, then an application of a mole cricket insecticide such as Diazinon, Orthene, or Dursban can be applied. Mole cricket baits are not very effective at this time of the year. Baits should be applied in mid-July. Mole crickets are difficult to control. Persistence may be the best answer to trying to live with them.
