Have a Healthy Baby & Kids in the Kitchen
Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program
(EFNEP) which is an integral part of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s Family and Consumer Science and 4-H Youth Programs. EFNEP teaches limited-resource audiences - adults and youth - how to improve their dietary practices and become more effective managers of available resources. Client learning, skill development, and behavior change is evaluated twice as they progress through EFNEP classes.
Three phases of EFNEP are offered in Montgomery County. These phases are Have a Healthy Baby, Cent$ible Nutrition and Kids in the Kitchen.
- Have a Healthy Baby is a nutrition education program designed specifically for pregnant women and new mothers. Lesson topics include special nutrients during pregnancy and for the baby, food safety, food selection and food buying, immunizations, and car seat safety.
- Cent$ible Nutrition reaches families with young children and assists them in acquiring knowledge, skills, and behavior changes for healthy diets. Lesson topics include MyPyramid, understanding food labels, food safety, food selection, food buying and menu planning.
- Kids in the Kitchen improve the nutritional status of limited-resource youth and youth-at-risk by providing information and education about nutrition, food safety and the relationship to health. Lesson topics include MyPyramid, nutritious snacks, physical activity, food safety, food selection and food buying, and nutrient functions.
Offered throughout Montgomery County, EFNEP class sites include: Montgomery County Health Department, Montgomery Housing Authority, Houston Hill Community Center, Floyd Community Center, New Macedonia Community Center, Harrison Elementary School, Carver Community Center, and Nellie Burgess Community Center, Goode St. Community Center, Boys & Girls Club.
