Urban Affairs and New Nontraditional Programs

As Alabama's population becomes more urban, outreach services must shift to meet changing needs. This unit provides educational programs to help the state's urban and nontraditional audiences adapt to changing environments and needs.

Health Rocks is a healthy life program based on decision-making and appropriate health knowledge with its beginning-level curriculum targeted at youth ages 8 to 12, and intermediate level targeted at youth ages 12 to 14. The experiential education program is facilitated by teen/adult leadership teams to help youth learn key health messages and skills such as critical thinking, how to manage stress and peer pressure, how to communicate effectively, and how to analyze media messages. Special emphasis is placed on tobacco use prevention; alcohol and drug use and introduce them to the benefits of making better choices.
Teens Making Impact (TMI) addresses emerging topics to prepare teens with information to support the development of skills for making sound career decisions, engaging in effective communication, pursuing healthier lifestyles, and to better understand government issues and their role as productive citizens.
Youth Leadership and Community Service Learning -The Points of Light Foundation engages and mobilizes millions of volunteers who are helping to solve serious social problems in thousands of communities. Through the Points of Lights Institute training and a variety of other programs, the Foundation encourages people from all walks of life - corporations, faith-based organizations, low-income communities, families, youth, and older adults - to volunteer. Utilizing the Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute (PYLI) curriculum, through a series of seventeen (17) teaching modules and thirteen (13) experiential exercises, the curriculum will take students through an eight phase model of problem-solving and goal setting. The target audience is 9th-12th graders.
Welcome to the Real World a hands on simulation with activities and training that provides direction and training on career and education planning. It stresses partnerships with local community based organizations to reach and engage the target audience. J. Elizabeth Phillips, Urban Regional Extension Agent also conducts this program

Volunteer in Urban Programs (VIP) is designed to recruit, enroll, and train volunteers through a structured program that captures the quantitative and qualitative value of volunteer services provided to the Urban Affairs and New Nontraditional Programs Unit of ACES. J. Elizabeth Phillips, Urban Regional Extension Agent also conducts this program
Successful Aging Initiative (SAI) partnerships between ACES and the Alabama Bureau of Geriatric Psychiatry educates and provide resources and referrals to Alabama citizens relative to current issues affecting the aging population including dementia and associated health issues, finance and elder law.
Community Economic Development

Partnership for Community Economic Development will record and report extension participation with community based organizations and programs. Activities which include support in the community through partnerships in administering programming will be highlighted. The optimal outcome will include increasing the network for business collaboration and support. Alliances with other non-profit and human services organizations will be featured and documented.
Virtual Minority Business Development works with minority business owners to enhance their capacity through online marketing and technical assistance, stimulate economic growth by focusing on the development of various types of business ventures. Resources will be accessed through a virtual business development center focused on showcasing minority businesses throughout the state.
Smart Home Buying & Foreclosure Prevention addresses the national crisis in the housing market. It aims to provide individuals/families who are currently interested in purchasing a house as well as those home owners who are having difficulty meeting their mortgage obligations with training and counseling services. Amanda C. Outlaw, Urban Regional Extension Agent also conducts this program

Human Nutrition, Diet & Health

Metropolitan Health, Nutrition and Wellness: CHAMPION (Community Health, Aerobic and Motivational Program Initiating Optimal Nutrition) addresses the needs of metropolitan inner cities that are at the highest risk for health related problems such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, hypertension and diabetes. It’s designed to increase participants’ knowledge and improve the overall health of the target audience through lifestyle changes.

Urban Nutrition Education Program (UNEP) a USDA Food Stamp nutrition education program that serves limited resource audiences, both adult and youth, in Alabama's nine metropolitan areas. Program educators seek to improve the knowledge and health of families and individuals by providing education on food selection, food preparation, food safety, food purchasing and security.
Health and Wellness Across the Lifespan: Families United through Nutrition a program to empower families to increase family meal time; increase fruit and vegetable consumption; increase physical activity; increase knowledge of food safety and chronic diseases.
