If you recently began beekeeping, intend to get a hive or are just interested in learning more about bees, you are welcome to attend this short course. There is no charge but please call 749-3353 if you plan to attend. Location will be at the Lee County Extension auditorium at 600 South 7th Street from 8:00 am until about noon. This course will also consist of a short drive to a local apiary where we will open up a hive for participants. There will be protective gear, but it is limited. Please bring your own if you have it. Cool Spring Favors Some Diseases The other day I was talking with someone and we both could not remember a more perfect spring. The cool weather, adequate rainfall and long blooming season has made the last couple of months outdoors most enjoyable. However, cool temperatures, humid conditions, and wet foliage spell diseases for some plants. Here are a few that we’ve seen a lot of this spring. ( Tar spot on Red Maple trees. This fungal disease causes small, irregular black spots that look like…….you guessed it, tar. There are protective fungicide sprays that will prevent it but none that will do any good now. The infection period has passed. ( Algal Leaf Spot. Once again, weather related disease that I’ve seen on Magnolia trees and Southern Red Oaks. We’ve seen an unusually high number of Magnolias shedding most of their older leaves this spring and I think some of it could be attributed to algal leaf spot. Like tar spot there are protective sprays that have to be applied prior to infection. ( Oak Leaf Blister. This fungal disease causes the leaves to have a blistered, distorted shape and loss of its green color. Discard leaves then drop off and can provide a source of infection for next year. All of these diseases are really considered cosmetic and do not warrant any chemical treatment now. If you absolutely were sure that your trees would be affected next spring, there are fungicide sprays that could be applied prior to infection. However, since no two seasons are ever the same and our weather is highly unpredictable, it is impossible to make this determination A better method of foliar disease control is to practice goo sanitation. If the tree (or any plant for that matter) drops diseased foliage, get it immediately and dispose of it either through composting or burning. Disease spores which serve as a source of future infection usually survive on discarded diseased tissue. Extension publication ANR 943 and ANR 945 are available from our website or through our office and can provide more detailed information on these diseases.
