4-H Canoeing Workshop a Huge Success!

The Cherokee County 4-H Program held a free 4-H Canoeing Workshop at the Terrapin Outdoor Center on Friday, July 13, 2007.  The workshop hosted 20 Cherokee County 4-H members (ages 9 to 14) and 20 parents/guardians of these youth.  Workshop sessions were taught by Joan Alexander, Gerald Benefield, Don Coley, Fred Couch, Linda Gunoe, and Bryan Matthews all experienced canoeing/kayaking instructors who volunteered their time to make this workshop a success.  The participants learned the importance of water safety: how to resuce someone caught in a current, how to walk through a body of water while caught in a swift current, how to float over a log if caught in a swift current, and how to paddle and maneuver a kayak and canoe.  After the morning sessions and lunch, the participants began a four-hour canoe trip down Terrapin Creek.  The workshop was a huge success and after many requests, the Cherokee County 4-H Program hopes to officer the workshop again next year.
