Outdoor Classroom Project

at Wellborn Elementary School

Calhoun County Extension has partnered with Wellborn Elementary PTO, Legacy, Inc., the Calhoun County Commission, Calhoun County Master Gardeners and the Calhoun County Beautification Board to construct an outdoor classroom at Wellborn Elementary. Their goal is to provide a suitable outdoor area to conduct educational programming, to highlight environmental education. These needs are being be addressed by construction an outdoor classroom in the courtyard area formed by previous school construction projects. This area provides a natural amphitheater type orientation as well as outdoor classroom security for students, volunteers, staff, equipment and teaching.

We are developing 15,576 square feet into an Outdoor Classroom and habitat for environmental education activities, as well as other school activities that can be enhanced by outdoor learning. The science, math, language and economics curricula will be strengthened by hands-on activities in the outdoor classroom. Landscape development will provide cover for birds, frogs, lizards, salamanders, butterflies and other wildlife. A water feature will provide water and incorporate aquatic plants. Bird feeders will attract and feed birds. Amphitheater seating and demonstration area will provide a true outdoor classroom where students can receive a superior instruction experience.

The ultimate goal is to become a low maintenance,

certified Alabama Outdoor Classroom School.

Here are some photos from the first WorkDay.

Principal O'Dell told students that he'd shave his head and allow the Legacy, Inc., logo to be painted on it if the school was awarded the Legacy grant.

Here's the video.
