Master Environmental Educators Recognized

The Baldwin County Master Environmental Educators (MEE) participated in an End of Year Celebration at Dauphin Island.  The volunteers participated in an educational tour of the Auburn University Shellfish Laboratory led by Scott Rikard, facility manager.  A presentation on the Oyster Gardening Program was conducted by P.J. Waters, Extension Specialist of the Auburn University Marine Extension and Research Center and MS-AL Sea Grant Program.  Bill Walton, PhD, Assistant Professor/Marine Fisheries & Aquatic Extension Specialist presented information on 'Potential Effects of the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill on Oysters'.  The MEEs also toured the Dauphin Island Estuarium.

Each Master Environmental Educator was recognized with a certificate for their participation in this year’s program.  During this school year, there were 136 environmental education programs presented by the MEEs to approximately 3000 students.  The topics included:  aquatic nuisance species, backyard wildlife habitat, energy, groundwater pollution, invasive plant species, nonpoint source pollution, recycling and water cycle.  There were nine presentations at after school programs and three programs for community organizations.  Thank you to all our volunteers for making a difference with environmental education in Baldwin County!  If you would like more information about the Master Environmental Education Program, please contact the Baldwin County Extension Office at 251-937-7176, 943-5061/928-0860 ext.2222.
