Alabama 4-H Launches New Energy-Wise Program

Alabama 4-H is launching Maximum Power: The Alabama 4-H Energy Program, a new initiative promoting effective energy use.  Funded by a grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, the program will arm young people with the tools and information they need to make informed decisions on energy use.

Maximum Power: The Alabama 4-H Energy Program will focus on three connected issues:

-Renewable and non-renewable resources, such as solar, wind, water, natural gas, petroleum and coal power.

-Energy efficiency, such as the use of insulation, rechargeable batteries and compact fluorescent bulbs.

-Wise use of energy, including  consumer choices such as alternative fuels and biofuels, and public versus private transportation.

Dr. Emily Kling, a 4-H and youth development curriculum specialist, says the new program will be a statewide effort and will reach upper elementary and middle-school students.

Maximum Power will provide young people with the hands-on, minds-on training they need to have a positive impact on energy use and conservation in their families and in their communities,” she says.

I’m excited about this new curriculum because it’s an incredibly timely program.  It really is the classic Extension program where young people learn new techniques and then model that behavior for parents and family.  In addition, Kling says the program will promote character growth in young people.

Four key character traits targeted are mastery through acquiring and applying new skills, knowledge and abilities; belonging through an emphasis on teamwork, families and communities; independence which enable youth to make informed decisions and follow through with actions; and generosity  through service to others.

During the year, 4-H plans to reach more than 10,000 young people with the Maximum Power initiative. Programs and activities are planned for local 4-H clubs and schools, at the 4-H Environmental Field School and at summer camp.  Contact me at the Baldwin County Extension Office for more information about these Energy-Wise program kits.

4-H Summer Camp

Since 1980 the Alabama 4-H Center has provided the youth of Alabama with an amazing summer camp experience.  4-H Campers are exposed to a variety of activities that help them develop many different life skills.  Campers travel through three program areas while at camp that include air rifle, archery, canoeing, climbing wall, GPS, radical reptiles, nature hike, fishing and the pool. Arts and Crafts are also offered.  Summer Camp Open Enrollment starts February 22 until May 16.  Six camp sessions are available from June 2-20.  I will be attending Session #2 from June 4-6.  Cost is $85 per camper.  Go to www.alabama4hcenter.org
