BVDV Meeting To Be Held In Atmore

If you get any of the popular cattlemen’s magazines (Alabama Cattlemen’s, Drovers, etc.), you have probably read an article about BVDV (or BVD, Bovine Viral Diarrhea), or seen an advertisement for a vaccine that is supposed to handle this particular virus. Until recently, most of us probably were not aware that we had a problem with BVD, but the last couple of years this has become a real “hot topic” item. Folks have a lot of questions about this virus such as: What exactly is BVD? How does it affect my herd? and What can I do about it?  Dr. Soren Rodning has organized a program that is designed to help producers get to the bottom of BVD. Dr. Rodning is traveling around the state presenting this information to producers. We will have one of these meetings on Friday, May 18th at the Poarch Creek auditorium in Atmore. I would encourage you to attend this meeting if you would like a better understanding of BVD and how it could affect your herd. There will be a meal served, so we ask you to please call in and tell us if you are coming. If you would like to come, please call the Monroe County Extension Office at (251)575-3477.

Fire Ants

It’s getting time to start cutting hay, and if you have fire ants in your hayfield you can certainly do some damage to a pretty expensive cutter when you run over those mounds. If you have fire ant mounds in your hayfield or pasture, remember that there are a limited number of products labeled to be used on these areas. If you refer to the Auburn University IPM guide for forages you will see there are three baits labeled on pasture and hayfield for cattle and one labeled exclusively for horses (if you would like an IPM guide you can download from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System website – www.aces.edu/animalforage
