The Alabama Regional Equine Information Network (REIN) training program will be offered at the Gulf Coast Research and Extension Center in Fairhope. The REIN program is designed to meet the needs of horse owners, horse professionals, and horse industry personnel in the state of Alabama. This will be a program that utilizes distance learning technology to simulcast classes across the state of Alabama. This program is similar in structure to the Master Cattle Producer program that the Alabama Cooperative Extension System has offered for several years in Alabama. The REIN program will meet on Monday and Thursday nights in October and on the first Thursday night in November, with classes beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The itinerary for the REIN program includes:

October 2 – National Animal ID Plan for Horses – Dr. Tony Frazier, D.V.M. and Dr. Terry Slaten, D.V.M.;  Conformation: Why is it Important? – Dr. Cindy McCall

October 5 – Horse Nutrition – Dr. Betsy Wagner

October 9 – Growing Forage Crops for Horses – Dr. Don Ball

October 12 – Equine Behavior and Training – Dr. Cindy McCall

October 16 – Equine Reproduction – Dr. Soren Rodning, D.V.M.

October 19 – Equine Exercise Physiology – Dr. Kari Turner

October 23 – Herd Health Management – Dr. David Pugh, D.V.M.

October 26 – Basic Horse Genetics for the Owner and Breeder – Dr. Cindy McCall

October 30  - Equine Business Management – Dr. Jackie DiPofi

November 2 – Composting and Handling Manure – Dr. Frank Owsley ; Maintaining Safe Equine Facilities – Dr. Cindy McCall

The Southwest Alabama Heifer sale will be held at the Frisco City Stockyard on Thursday, September 7. The sale will begin at 7:00 p.m. with approximately 60 head of open heifers and 3 bred heifers to be sold. There will be three educational opportunities offered at the Escambia County Stockyard for goat producers. The dates for these events will be Saturday, September 30, Saturday, October 28, and Saturday, November 18. The sessions will be one hour long beginning at 11:00 a.m. and ending with the start of the sale at 12:00. The sessions will cover the topics of live animal grading (what do the order buyers look for), quality assurance, and parasite control.
