County Extension Coordinator

July 1, 2008

Would you like to see more people involved in recycling and caring for our environment?  If so, you may be interested in becoming a Master Environmental Educator.  We are seeking volunteers to teach environmental awareness in Baldwin County.  The Master Environmental Education Program was developed in 1995 by Emily Kling with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.  The program was developed so Baldwin County residents would have an appreciation and understanding for the environment in their own backyards.  Previous teaching experience or environmental knowledge is not required.  The Master Environmental Education (MEE) Program has a two-day training session scheduled for volunteers on August 21 and 22 at Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.  This training will provide you with the information and resource materials you will need.  Volunteers will receive training on recycling, the water cycle, household hazardous waste, groundwater pollution, septic systems, solid waste management, nonpoint source pollution, and aquatic nuisance species.  Once trained, the Master Environmental Educators are asked to donate 20 hours of time a year to teach one or more of the lessons in the community, or participate in MEE educational exhibits in our county.   To request a MEE application, contact Crystal Oates at the Baldwin County Extension Office at 937-7176 or 943-5611/928-0860, extension 2222.

 MEE Meeting

The Master Environmental Educators met recently at the Five Rivers Delta Resource Center.  Each of the 2007-2008 volunteers was recognized with a certificate during the meeting. The volunteers toured the exhibit hall, watched an educational program in the theater and participated in an educational boat tour of the Delta.  The highlight of the tour was seeing an eagle.
