High Tunnel Pest Exclusion (HTPE) System

Pest prevention is a critical tactic for specialty crop producers. The HTPE system is aimed at reducing the entry of large insect pests and has worked really well to stop leaffooted bugs, stink bugs, armyworms, loopers, and hornworms. Check out the videos and the publications below for details. Producer experiences are also included in the videos. If possible, please contact Dr. A (251-331-8416) for more information before deciding exclusion fabric. Producers in Alabama should contact a Commercial Horticulture Regional Extension Agent for identifying pest issues correctly and then developing an IPM plan. Introduction to High Tunnel Pest Exclusion

This video provides basic information about a pest exclusion system using shade cloths that is suitable for high tunnel vegetable producers. The video also has producer testimonials showing the usefulness of this IPM tactic.

HTPE System for Leaffooted Bug Control

This video provides a short discussion about the benefits of leaffooted bug exclusion from high tunnel crops using various types of shade cloths.

HTPE System and Beneficial Insects

This video describes the effect of various shade cloths on beneficial insects. The goal is to prevent pest infestations in high tunnel crops with minimal impact on some common beneficial insects.

HTPE On-farm experiences

This video describes observations from six on-farm research experiences where producers were benefited from the HTPE system.

Producer Testimonial - Will Mastin

(SARE On-farm Video 2016)

The High Tunnel Pest Exclusion or HTPE system uses past knowledge and experience on pest exclusion tactic that is suitable for high tunnel producers in the southeast. A 40 or 50 percent woven shadecloth can be used very effectively to exclude major insect pests like armyworms, hornworms, fruitworms, leaffooted bugs and stink bugs.
