2013 Central Alabama Horse Grazing Symposium

On Friday, April 5, 2013, the Alabama Cooperative Extension System will sponsor a Central Alabama Horse grazing Symposium. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Jemison Municipal Complex (24747 U.S. Hwy 31 in Jemison).

Topics include:

  • Nutrient Management for forages
  • Forage Crop Information and Management
  • Managing fall armyworms and other forage pests
  • Weed ID and Management
  • Grazing Horse Nutrition and Management

There is a $40 registration fee which covers the symposium, materials and lunch. Registration deadline is April 1, 2013

2013 Environmental Stewardship Clinics

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) has partnered with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, Cherokee County Soil & Water Conservation District, and Weiss Lake Improvement Association to host a series of clinics to address water and land management needs.

The Series will start on January 15 at the Chamber of Commerce room from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Gadsden State Community College Campus in Centre, AL. The first clinic will be Introduction to Water Resources presented by Dr. Eve Brantley, Extension Water Specialist with ACES. The following clinics will be held at various locations throughout Cherokee County. Please call the Cherokee County Extension Office for locations of other clinics (256) 927-3250.

The topics are as follows: Introduction to Water Resources (Jan.15); Soil Management for Healthy Water (Feb. 5); Managing Streamside Forests for Wildlife, livestock, and water Health (Mar.5); Grass Management for Healthy Water (Apr. 16); Farm Pond Management (May 14); Smart Yards for Healthy Water (Saturday June 1). Horses and Poisonous Plants

As part of the Horse Owner Resource, Science and Education Program Series in the Tennessee Valley, a program will be presented on Monday, April 1st, 2013 entitled:

Poisonous Plants of Concern to Horse Owners

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Tennessee Valley Research and Extension Center in Belle Mina.

There is a $5.00 registration fee to attend and pre-registration is requested.

Equine Management Program

The Equine Management Program is a comprehensive four-part educational program for horse owners and enthusiasts seeking timely information about nutrition, health, soil fertility, pasture management and pst management featuring experts from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and Coosa Valley Equine Services.

Session 1: Soil and Pasture Management

Session II: Feeding and Nutrition

Session III: Equine Health Management

Session IV: Integrated Pest Management

Classes begin April 11, 2013 and will be held at the Pell City Civic Center. Each class begins at 6:00 p.m.

There is a $40 registration fee. This includes all sessions, meals and course materials. Registration deadline is April 9, 2013.

Beef Forages Meeting

On Saturday, May 11, 2013 at the Clay County Stockyard in Ashland, all interested producers are invited to participate in a meeting and field day.

 

9:45 am Beef Nutrition

10:45 am Forages including clovers and haylage

11:45 am Calf Management

12:10 pm Lunch provided by Clay County Cattlemen. $6.50/plate

1:00 pm Cutting and Baling of haylage demonstration

1:45 pm Adjourn

Grass Masters Program

Grass Masters is a comprehensive four-day study
(two hours) on basic topics from Soil Fertility and
Weed Control to Plant Physiology and Grazing Systems.


The cost of the program will be $75.00 and
this will provide the power point presentations in a
manual, the “Weeds of the South” book which is a
great for identification purpose, refreshments and a
Grass Masters cap. This program is designed for beginners who want to understand more about the management of forages for profitability.

This Grass Masters Series will be held at the ALFA Environmental Center on the campus of the University of West Alabama in Livingston. Classes will be held April 2, 9, 16 and 23, 2013 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
