The Calhoun County 4-H Horse Club is open to youth ages 9-19. The main purpose of the club is to educate youth about equines through observation and/or hands-on activities at actual sites where there are horses, mules, and/or donkeys, and to help youth develop leadership and life skills with their peers and adults. You do not have to own a horse to participate. This is NOT a riding club at this time, but instead, a fun, educational experience for youth to learn horse science as well as responsible horse ownership through field trips that provide interaction with equine experts and sites in the horse industry such as horse trainers, breeders, veterinarians, riding instructors, feed and tack shops, barns, horse shows, etc. Future activities may include trail rides, preparation for horse shows, and a drill team.
The group has their own adult leaders as well as elected youth officers: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Inspirational Leader, Reporter and Refreshment Coordinator.
Membership in the Calhoun County 4-H Horse Club is free, however, there is a $1 annual accident insurance fee that is mandatory for members, as well as participating parents/guardians. There may be fees for optional horse shows and special events.
Youth may also strengthen their knowledge of horses science by completing a series of workbooks in the 4-H Skills for Life Animal Science Series, available from the National 4-H Cooperative Curriculum System, Inc. Visit www.n4hccs.org for more information.
