Row Crops in Southwest Alabama

The Fairhope Gulf Coast Research and Extension Center Row Crop Field Day, will be held September 11, 2007 at the Gulf Coast Research and Extension Center (GCREC) on Highway 104 near Fairhope.  The starting time will be 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  There will be a tour of the soybean, cotton and peanut research tests.  The speakers are  Malcomb Pegues, with GCREC, Dr. Barry Tillman, University of Florida Peanut Plant Breeder and from Auburn University  Dr. Austin Hagan, Peanut Pathologist,  Dr. Dale Monks, Cotton Agronomist, Dr. Kathy Lawrence, Cotton Pathologist, Dr. Ed Sikora, Soybean Pathologist, and Dr. Dennis Delaney, Soybean Agronomist.  There will be a sponsored dinner at the end.  For more information, contact Gulf Coast Research and Extension Center at (251) 928-2740.

Peanut Crop Update:  150,000 acres of peanuts planted in Alabama in 2007.  Approximately 40,000 acres planted in the Southwest Region and are in good to excellent condition.  Growers are encouraged to continue their fungicide program for leaf spot, white mold and Rhizoctonia limb rot.  Weather conditions are very favorable for these diseases which can all be a major problem.  Insect pressure has been fairly low this year, but should be building up.

Soybean Update:  There are approximately 25,000 acres of Soybeans planted in southwest Alabama.  The crop is in good to excellent condition.  Baldwin County is the only county in the state that soybean rust has been found and this is only in the Asian Rust Sentinel Plot and not in any commercial fields.  Presently it is recommended that growers keep their beans protected with a fungicide from early bloom through the R6 full pod stage.  The Auburn University Soybean Rust Hotline (Dr. Ed Sikora) is 800-446-0388.
